Man accused of fatally beating brother with tire iron, arson


COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a man has been charged in connection with the beating death of his brother.

The State reports ( ) that 29-year-old James Moses Thomas was charged with arson and murder on Wednesday, after firefighters responding to a house fire that morning found 40-year-old Dante Barksdale dead inside the home.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says an autopsy indicates Barksdale died from blunt head trauma. Investigators believe the brothers were involved in an altercation and Barksdale was beaten to death with a tire iron.

A news release from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says Thomas was identified as a suspect through DNA evidence taken from the scene.

Thomas was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
