PHOENIX (KNXV/CNN) – A family is grieving after their neighbor reportedly “euthanized” their dog with a sledgehammer after she had been hit by a car.
The Garcia family’s dog Beau was hit by a car Sunday night, witness Jessica Headley says.
“She was able to crawl to the porch. She wasn’t yelping, but she was panting hard,” Headley said.
The family wasn’t home, and Headley says she planned to take Beau to the veterinarian when a neighbor came over with a sledgehammer.
“I was like, ‘What are you doing? You can’t do that,’” Headley said.
Headley says the neighbor told her “the dog was suffering” and needed to be killed.
A dog owner herself, Headley tried to keep the man away from Beau but couldn’t.
The man hit Beau twice with the hammer, killing her, Headley says.
“That’s the last thing she saw was some stranger with a sledgehammer? That’s horrible,” Headley said.
Police say there haven’t been any charges or arrests.
“I wish he would think twice about doing what he did to our dog,” said Jesse Garcia, one of Beau’s owners.
