CONWAY – Both Georgia Southern and Coastal Carolina scored a run in the ninth to force extra innings, however the Eagles (25-14, 10-7 Sun Belt) scored two in the 10th while the Chanticleers (24-14-1, 11-5-1) only scored once as the visitors claimed a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Springs Books Stadium.

The rubber match for the series will be played Sunday at 1 pm.

In the 10th, Georgia Southern’s Ryan Cleveland was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored when Mason McWhorter (3-for-5) singled. McWhorter advanced to second on a ground out and took third on passed ball. Evan McDonald then looped a single just beyond the reach of CCU’s Myers to bring home McWhorter for a 7-5 lead. For the game, McWhorter, McDonald and Tyler Martin each had two RBI.

In the bottom of the 10th, Kieton Rivers (3-for-5) hit a one-out triple and scored on a Seth Lancaster RBI ground out to provide the 7-6 final.

Georgia Southern closer Landon Hughes worked the last three innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. He allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts. Bobby Holmes (2-3) suffered the loss as he allowed two hits and two runs (one earned).

Georgia Southern loaded the bases and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Steven Curry was hit on the first of the game and Mitchell Gordon reached on an error. Cleveland loaded the bases on a one-out walk. Then, with two outs, Martin lined a double down the left field line to score both Curry and Gordon, but Cleveland was thrown out at the plate to limit the damage.

Coastal answered with a tally in the bottom of the fist. Billy Cooke walked and Wood Myers, who was 4-for-4, singled. After a passed ball allowed the two runners to move up 90- feet, Jordan Gore hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Cooke.

The Chants used a similar formula in the third to tie the game. Cooke, Myers and Gore had consecutive hits to start the home half, the last being an RBI to score Cooke.

The Eagles regained the lead, 3-2, in the fourth as Cleveland hit the first pitch of the frame out of the ballpark for his 10th home run of the season.

Coastal tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth. Myers doubled, moved to third on a Gore sac bunt and scored on a passed ball.

However, Georgia Southern once again immediately regained the lead, 4-3, in the top of the six when McWhorter hit his fourth home run of the season.

The Chants knotted the game in the seventh, 4-4. Even though CCU loaded the bases with no outs (Cooke was hit by a pitch with Myers and Gore getting back-to-back bunt singles), it only managed one run when Woodall hit into a double play that allowed Cooke to score.

The Eagles took a 5-4 lead in the ninth. McWhorter had a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI single by McDonald. Coastal responded with a run in the home half thanks to a Georgia Southern error. Matt Beaird singled and moved to second on a Cooke sacrifice bunt. Josh Crump pinch ran for Beaird and scored from second when Gore reached on a throwing error.
