CONWAY – Troy scored four runs in the third inning and that was all either team could muster as the Trojans took a 4-0 decision from Coastal Carolina Friday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Troy (24-17, 10-9 Sun Belt) used three consecutive hits and a two-out, two-run home run to score its runs. Drew Frederic and Steven Whitaker had back-to-back singles to right field. Frederic moved to third on the hit by Whitaker, who took second on the play when CCU tried to throw out Fredric at third. Matt Sanders followed with an infield single to drive in Frederic while a throwing error on the play allowed Whitaker to score as well. Two batters later, Trevor Davis hit a two-run home run for the 4-0 lead.
While Troy won, it only had seven hits – five in the decisive third inning. However, Coastal’s offense was held to just four hits while striking out 13 times.
Andrew Cane (4-1) earned the win as he pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Coy Gill, who has stuck out 19 of the last 33 he faced, picked up his fifth save as he worked the final three innings. He did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out six.
Alex Cunningham (5-2) was the tough-luck loser. He allowed six hits and four runs in seven innings over seven innings with a walk and six strikeouts.
The teams will square off again Saturday at 2 pm.
