CONWAY – De’Angelo Henderson, Coastal Carolina’s all-time leading rusher and scorer, was selected by the Denver Broncos in the sixth round (203rd overall pick) of the 2017 NFL Draft.
Henderson becomes the sixth Chanticleer to be drafted since the program’s inception in 2003 and the third to be drafted in the last four years. In fact, Henderson and current Baltimore Raven running back Lorenzo Taliaferro (2014 4th round – 138th pick) played together in the same CCU backfield in the 2013 season with Taliaferro rushing for a CCU record 1,729 yards and Henderson gaining 599.
Other Chants to be drafted include QB Tyler Thigpen (2007, 7th round – 217th pick), WR Jerome Simpson (2008, 2nd round – 46th pick), Josh Norman (2012, 5th round – 143d pick) and WR Matt Hazel (2014, 6th round – 190th pick) while Quinton Teal (2007), Mike Tolbert (2008), Maurice Simpkins (2010) and Denzel Rice (2015) all made NFL rosters after signing as free agents.
Henderson, who graduated from Coastal Carolina prior to his junior season, was a two-time FCS National Offensive Player of the Year finalist and a two-time FCS All-American. He set the NCAA Division I record by scoring at least one touchdown in 35 consecutive games. Henderson scored a total of 58 times over the span, including 52 rushing and six receiving.
In the CCU record book, Henderson established himself as the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,635), rushing attempts (721), rushing touchdowns (58), average yards per rush (6.42), average rushing yards per game (92.7), most 100-yard rushing games (25), all purpose yards (5,556), all purpose yards per game (111.1), points scored (386) and touchdowns scored (64). He additionally ranks third in TD responsible for (64), fifth in total offense (4.635), sixth in pass receptions (97), 10th in pass receptions TDs (60 and 13th in pass receiving yards (921).
