Emergency management officials in Spartanburg County said 25 people were forced out of their homes when an apartment building caught fire early Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out just after midnight at Valley Creek Apartments on Fairforest Road.
According to Captain Derrick Miller of the Westview-Fairforest Fire Department, the call came in at 12:02 a.m. Tuesday.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from the second floor of one building. That floor is a total loss, according to Captain Miller.
Perry Gosnell with Spartanburg County Emergency Management said the fire completely destroyed three families’ homes. The third floor sustained some smoke damage and the first floor also saw smoke and water damage. Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it reached the common attic. Gosnell said if the fire reached the attic space, it could have quickly spread.
In total, Gosnell said 25 people were displaced by the fire.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the cause remains under investigation.
In addition to Westview-Fairforest, other responding fire departments included North Spartanburg, Wingo Park, Una, and Hilltop.
