I-85 S at exit 106 closed in Cherokee Co. following fatal fiery crash involving 2 tractor trailers

CHEROKEE, SC (FOX Carolina) –

The Cherokee County Coroner was called to the scene of a fiery collision that had closed parts of I-85 Tuesday evening.

Per dispatch, the call came in at 8:12 p.m. at exit 106 near Grover, NC, and just north of Blacksburg.

All lanes are blocked and a detour is in place.

The Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department confirms two tractor trailers were involved in the wreck.

The coroner said the driver of one tractor trailer was traveling north when they crossed the median and T-boned the other trailer on the southbound lane, igniting a fire.

The driver that crossed the median died at the scene. The coroner said he will need to rely on dental records to identify the victim, as the injuries sustained by the driver are so severe that the victim is unrecognizable.

The coroner also mentioned the driver and a passenger from the trailer hit were pulled from wreckage by a passerby.

Fire officials say I-85 S will be closed for a long duration while crews clean up the debris.
