Coast Guard: Person who reported threat to Charleston port detained for questioning, threat unfounded

Officials with the United States Coast Guard Southeast said the original source that reported a threat in the port of Charleston has been detained by authorities for questioning, after they determined it didn’t exist.

According to our local Charleston area affiliate WCSC, federal and state authorities began investigating a threat reported at Wando terminal around 8 p.m. after authorities were made aware of a potential threat in a container aboard the vessel Maersk Memphis.

The official information was posted on the USCG website:

At approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday authorities were made aware of a potential threat in a container aboard the vessel Maersk Memphis in the Port of Charleston.

The Maersk Memphis is currently moored at Charleston’s Wando terminal which has been evacuated while law enforcement units from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies investigate the threat.

An unified command has been established to oversee the coordinated response.

Around 3:43 a.m., USCG Southeast tweeted that there was no existing threat to the port, that the terminal would reopen and that the safety zone was lifted.

USCG said their agency, FBI, SC DNR, Mount Pleasant Police, Mount Pleasant Fire, Charleston County, Charleston Port Authority, National Guard CST unit 43 and CGIS all assisted in the investigation.
