Birmingham police are investigating a homicide in the 1100 block of 15th Place Southwest.
Lt. Sean Edwards said officers responded to a shooting at the scene and found 47-year-old Erskine Hawkins.
Edwards said the shooting appears to have stemmed from allegations that the victim sexually assaulted his girlfriend’s 13-year-old daughter.
“Apparently, the daughter told some family members and they retaliated,” Edwards said.

The sexual allegation call came out first then the homicide call went out and then someone else called and said that home was shot into.
“We would always hope that family members do not take justice into their own hands. We have to speak with the mother. She’s being transported to the administration building. We will probably speak with a 13-year-old as well. We have some work to do but the unfortunate thing is we have a person who is deceased,” Edwards said.
“There’s no reason for this individual to be shot down the way he was so we have our job cut out for us to try and figure out with led up to this and if the allegations are true. That’s the unfortunate thing. We don’t want people to take the law into their own hands,” he continued.
