Teen accused of carjacking South Carolina man arrested

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) – A teenager accused of carjacking a homeless South Carolina man has been arrested in Georgia.

The Anderson Independent Mail reports that 18-year-old Jerry Lee Spence was facing an arrest warrant issued in the Sept. 3 carjacking of 74-year-old Jessie Alexander, but authorities say Spence went on the run.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Steve Combs says Spence was captured in Royston, Georgia, on Friday.

The arrest warrant says Spence used pepper spray and force to take Alexander’s car and then abandoned the man on a street. Alexander told the newspaper he and Spence had been staying in rooms at a motel and he had asked Spence to ride with him as leg pain made him afraid to drive alone.

It’s unclear if Spence has a lawyer.
