COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina officials have agreed to allow a private college to supervise five charter schools.
The State newspaper reported the South Carolina Public Charter School District’s trustees agreed Thursday to requests by five charters schools to transfer their oversight to Erskine College’s Charter Institute in Due West.
The state charter school district rejected similar requests from four other charters.
Charter schools receive funding from South Carolina but do not have to comply with the same rules as regular public schools.
The schools getting approval to transfer to Erskine’s control are in Goose Creek, Jasper County, Mount Pleasant, Socastee and West Columbia.
Some of the schools seeking Erskine’s oversight said they would have more opportunities for staff professional development and collaboration with the college than they have with the state district.
