The Georgetown City Council is still going to vote on the rezoning of the local steel mill in spite of its recent sale.
The council is expected to give the approval needed. A newly-worded rezoning ordinance is not expected to impact the restart of the mill according to county administrator Paul Gardner.
The ordinance allows the rezoning to move from heavy industrial to mixed-use if the mill is idle for 365 straight days, a clock which doesn’t start if the mill sits empty because of a strike or work dispute. The ordinance wouldn’t kick in until January 2019, effectively giving the new mill ownership group, Liberty House, a whole year to get the mill up and running.
The City Planning Comssion approved the ordinance last week with a recommendation of approval to the council.
