Finlay Park fatal shooting likely first in park’s history


COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A fatal shooting this weekend in the largest park in South Carolina’s capital appears to be the first in the park’s history.

The State reports ( ) that Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says 37-year-old Laron L. Martin died as a result of a shooting incident Saturday morning. Columbia Police Department public information liaison Jennifer Timmons says police did not have a suspect in custody as of Sunday, but are searching for two women who were at the park and are believed to have information regarding the shooting.

Timmons says Martin and the shooter are believed to have been arguing before the shootings.

Columbia Assistant City Manager Allison Baker says the homicide appears to be the first shooting in the park’s 27-year history.
