PORT ROYAL, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina man has been rescued after he was swept away in a river while trying to retrieve his kayak.
The Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Department said several agencies responded to help a swimmer in the Beaufort River on Wednesday.
The swimmer told rescuers he lives on a sailboat and awoke to find his kayak had drifted into the marsh. The man says he got into the water to swim out the kayak and was swept away by the river current.
The fire department said the man was shivering and very cold when he was pulled into a boat and brought back to land. The man was wearing a lifejacket.
It was unclear how long the man had been in the water. His name was not released.
